Hans Schiller PlazaThis site has been a catalyst for the revitalization of Leland Avenue and functions as a gathering place for public events. We are in the process of planting larger trees around the inside perimeter and adding more plants. Community GardenThis site has been in continuous use for over 20 years and has provided a venue for local gardeners to work together and grow their own organic food and flowers. The culturally diverse membership runs the age gamut from those in their eighties to those family members who bring their toddlers to garden, as well as residents from the local AIDS hospice. The Community Garden has provided a place of refuge and hope for these residents. The Trust for Public Land is funding and managing the site's renovation, which is now underway. It will include raised gardening tables that are ADA accessible for those who are wheelchair bound or otherwise unable to take care of plots on the ground level, new fencing, retaining walls, a pedestrian pathway, reconfigured plots and a propagation center consisting of a greenhouse, potting area and storage space. |
Childrens Play GardenThis site includes an Enchanted Forest, Children's garden, playground equipment, Valley Viewing Pavilion and Magic Meadow. |
Native Plant GardenAfter a successful series of community workshops, construction is now underway. The California Academy of Science has been instrumental in the design and selection of plant materials for this site on Tioga Avenue - half a block from McLaren Park. Low Impact Design (LID) methods for water infiltration have been incorporated, as done on all the Greenway sites. The site will be completed in winter, 2008 and be devoted to science education. OverallThe Greenway and California Academy of Sciences have begun coordinating a program to work with local children to bring the Academy's invaluable expertise to Visitacion Valley and make the entire Greenway an outdoor classroom. Thanks to a generous donation by Floorcraft Gardening Center there are several new fruit trees and various perennials to plant on the Greenway.
